Great moments happen for seconds. Most of life is boring, tedious, and full of suffering. Despite the disparity, we can be content with the bigger picture. We fight for the seconds of joy amidst hours, days, months, and years of nothing, pain, and suffering. When you think that most of the world suffers far more than North Americans and Western Europeans, it’s incredible that they function at all. There is always a feeling of discomfort in my mission work. I go to a poor country, throw money around for a week, and return to my first world enclave. In the meantime, the people I helped are left to wait anxiously for my return. It’s so ridiculous. It’s such a crapshoot that I’m not the one waiting for some foreigner to come to my poor country and alleviate my suffering. Life is heavy.
