Morgan’s Rock December 26, 2020 5:26 pm
I had a moment looking at the sunset and the waves crashing against the rocks today. The scene played out in slow motion before me. I thought about the indescribable beauty before me and how many beautiful moments like this are missed by so many of us. Immediately, I had the notion that they were not entirely missed but were continuously witnessed by a host of unseen beings. A great chorus that constantly witnesses the majesty of God’s creation in awe and wonder. The heavens declare the glory of God, and this moment is testimony to that fact.
These are the first lines in Bruce Cockburn’s song Rumors of Glory :
Above the dark town
After the sun’s gone down
Two vapour trails cross the sky
Catching the day’s last slow goodbye
Black skyline looks rich as velvet
Something is shining
Like gold but better
Rumours of glory

There’s something behind the beauty of that sunset, a hint of a better world that awaits us. The song’s message ties in with sociologist Peter Berger’s book Rumors of Angels, in which he argues that there are rumors or hints of the supernatural in things like play, hope, and order. I see those hints everywhere.
